About the Author Andrew Caillard MW began his wine career in Bordeaux in 1979 and worked as stagaire at Ch Paveil de Luze and with Alfred de Luze et Fils on the Quai Chartrons. As a wine auctioneer in Sydney, he spent over 35 years handling Grand Cru Classé wines. Since 2002, he has travelled to Bordeaux regularly to assess the vintage, engage with vignerons and negociants and provide expert advice to buying teams in Australia. This ejournal is Andrew Caillard’s first published report on Bordeaux Primeurs to be circulated in the public arena.

Les Pagodes de Cos Blanc (Château Cos d’Estournel) 92–93 Pale colour. Intense verbena, lemon, grapefruit glacé aromas. Lovely ripe lemon curd, grapefruit flavours, fine tonic water notes, chalky textures, and integrated fresh acidity. Very good mid-palate sweetness and freshness. 85% sauvignon blanc, 15% semillon. 8% new French oak. 12% alc Les Champs Libres Blanc 91–92 Pale colour. Intense grassy bitter lemon curd, grapefruit, hint pineapple with tonic water notes. Well concentrated minerally slightly saline palate with lemon curd, pineapple, some tonic water flavours and chalky chewy textures. Very good density and crispness. Quite substantial wine but screeching acidity. 73% sauvignon blanc, 27% semillon. Château Carbonnieux Blanc 90–91 Pale colour. Intense lemon lime aromas with waxy herb notes. Medium- bodied. Fresh lemon and lime flavours, fine chalky textures and attractive mineral length with some al dente notes. 67% sauvignon blanc, 33% semillon. Roughly 10–12 months in 25% new French oak. 13.5% alc Château Suduiraut Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec 90–91 Pale colour. Intense grapefruit, lemon curd aromas. Supple and textured with ample lemon curd flavours, some tonic water notes, vanilla/ chalky notes and pronounced acidity at the finish. 52% semillon, 48% sauvignon blanc. Assemblage after 6 months – 50% in vats, 25% new and 25% seasoned French oak barriques. 13% alc Château Grand Village Blanc 88–89 Pale colour. Grapefruit, camomile aromas with pastry, chalky, hint aniseed aromas. Quite lean on the palate with grapefruit, bitter lemon fruits, some yeasty notes and fine searing acidity. Will fill out with a touch of bottle age. 100% sauvignon blanc. Château Latour Martillac Blanc 88–89 Pale colour. Lemon curd, grapefruit aromas. Generous and minerally with ample bitter lemon grapefruit notes and underlying slightly hard acidity. Finishes chalky and long. 57% sauvignon, 43% semillon.
