1998 Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon Hunter Valley, New South Wales

Pale straw colour. Intense lemon curd, roasted nuts, hint marzipan aromas with honey, fresh straw. Profoundly complex honey, hint tobacco, grapefruit/lemon flavours, fine bittersweet/hint sappy textures, very attractive viscosity and fresh crisp acidity. Some oilskin/slaty/hint smoky notes at the finish. Considered a great Hunter Valley Semillon vintage. First vintage under screwcap. 10.5% alc Drink now– keep for a while

2021 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay Hunter Valley, New South Wales

G 96

Pale colour. Fresh grapefruit, hint mango aromas with light flinty, marzipan notes. Buoyant and creamy wine with pure grapefruit, mango, hint passion fruit flavours, fine loose-knit textures, lovely underlying marzipan/grilled nut notes and long fresh acidity. Ripe and expressive Chardonnay with very good density and mineral length. A touch of bottle age will allow the fruit to settle down and meld with the structure. The 50th vintage in the series. 13.5% alc Drink now–2030

2019 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay Hunter Valley, New South Wales

Pale colour. Fresh grapefruit, nectarine aromas with biscuity, hint toasty notes. Well concentrated wine with grapefruit, nectarine, tropical fruit notes, fine lacy textures, fine integrated quartz-like acidity, a hint of butterscotch and underlying grilled nut notes. In a very good place now, with beautifully developed fruit and mineral freshness. 13% alc Drink now–2028

2017 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay Hunter Valley, New South Wales

G 94

Pale colour, Intense white peach, apricot aromas with grilled nut, toasty, lanolin notes. Creamy textured wine with ample stone fruit, tropical fruit flavours, fine loose-knit textures, very good mid-palate viscosity and underlying marzipan, toasty notes. Finishes chalky with minerally/bitter lemon notes. Lovely weight and fruit complexity. At its peak of development, although should hold under screwcap for quite a while. 13% alc Drink now–2028

2013 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay Hunter Valley, New South Wales

G 94

Pale straw colour. Attractive marzipan, nectarine grapefruit aromas with hints of vanilla/brioche. Fresh and developed marzipan, stone fruit, hint tobacco leaf flavours, fine loose-knit chalky/hint al dente textures and underlying grilled nut, herb garden notes. Textured and bottle aged with well-developed fruits and linear fresh acidity. 13.5% alc Drink now–2026
