Tasting Notes

1937 Mount Pleasant Mountain A Dry Red Hunter Valley, New South Wales

1937 Mountain A epitomised Maurice O’Shea’s genius. Wine writer James Halliday recalled the 1937 Mountain A Dry Red would ‘ live with me for the rest of my days ’. ‘ Ethereal in its delicacy, light and smooth, but with a soft, intense, lingering finish ’, it vies for being one of the great wines of the era.

1986 Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz Hunter Valley, New South Wales

The Graveyard Vineyard was planted in 1978 and has lived up to its promise as one of the Hunter Valley’s most distinguished vineyard sites. 1986 Graveyard Shiraz is a landmark vintage for both Brokenwood and the Hunter Valley. It is the greatest Hunter Valley wine produced in 21 years, since the 1963 Lindemans Bin 3100 Hunter River Burgundy. This sensuous wine was famously tasted against Penfolds Grange, Wynns Coonawarra Estate John Riddoch, Mount Mary Quintet, Yarra Yering and others, and was the unanimous favourite. This is a coming-of-age wine that shows the promise of the Hunter Valley and the enduring character of a single vineyard. It also represents the values of modern day Australian winemaking, where collaboration, 19th century genetic material, contemporary techniques and superb vintage conditions combine to make something of great substance, complexity and beauty.
