This is a big, bold blockbuster from a belter of a vintage in the Barossa. There is plenty of oak still in evidence, but integration is proceeding well, and at this stage, it is imbuing the wine with a pleasing touch of vanilla. The palate sees the emergence of notes of coffee beans. The structure offers a seductive texture, good length and ultra-fine tannins. Impressive all round. Drink now–2037 Hayes Family Wines Estate Block 1 Shiraz 2023 G 93 Just 2000 bottles made of this single-block Shiraz from the Stonewell sub-region, this is a wine which very much impresses. Inky dark purple, the nose has notes of blackberries, liquorice, chocolate, mushrooms and spices, including a flick of black pepper. There is a serious structure to this wine with good integration and a surprising degree of austerity for a Barossa Shiraz. A most impressive wine with much to like and a good future. Drink now–2037 HEAD Wines RED Shiraz 2023 G 93 Attractive crimson. Spices, herbs, red fruits, strawberries and redcurrants. There is also a touch of aniseed, leather and warm earth. Very much classic Shiraz, especially Barossa Shiraz. The wine is fresh, still very youthful, well balanced with silty tannins and juicy acidity and a very persistent finish. Delicious drinking but there would be nothing wrong with giving the wine a brief chill prior to opening. Drink now–2033 Hewitson Ned & Henry’s Shiraz 2023 G 93 Medium-deep crimson. Attractive blackberry, roasted walnut aromas with some peppery notes. Supple and velvety textured with ample blackberry, roasted walnut, touch ginger, peppery flavours and fine slinky tannins. Finishes chocolaty and long with juicy dark berry fruits and hint leafy notes. A versatile and classic Barossa style for early or medium-term drinking. Drink 2026–2033
