Deep crimson. Intense ripe blackberry, elderberry, stone fruit aromas with aniseed notes. Voluminous blackberry apricot, dark chocolate flavours and fine rusty firm tannins. Lovely buoyancy on the mid-palate and aniseed line. Finishes long with plentiful dark berry fruits. 14.5% alc Drink now–2034 Lone Palm Vineyard Hillside Shiraz 2022 G 94 The fruit here comes from their best vineyard at Marananga, a west-facing hillside. It spends a year-and-a-half in a mix of French and American oak. The colour is a near opaque maroon, with a nose which reveals notes of spices, cold tea, florals and lots of chocolate. Touches of coffee grinds and black fruits provide a supporting layer. This is a typical, balanced, full of flavour Barossa red, well balanced and with ultra-fine, rather velvety tannins, which will provide pleasure for at least a decade. Drink now–2034 Mirus Vineyards Ridge Block 21 Shiraz 2022 G 94 Deep crimson. Deep-set chocolate, blackberry and espresso notes. Brooding palate with graphite, liquorice and toasty oak beautifully proportioned with firm yet fine

Pepperjack is perhaps best known for their cracking value, delicious reds, so this is somewhat of a departure, but a most welcome one. From a single vineyard in the Greenock sub-region, there is a dollop of Cabernet included in this superb red. Very dark purple in colour, this is generous, plush and with saturated flavours and good extract. The nose exhibits notes of mocha, coffee beans, chocolate, dried herbs, blueberries, spices, cassis and black fruits. There is good length here and fine tannins with the emergence of aniseed and soy. Excellent focus and energy, this very attractive Shiraz will provide great drinking for the next six to 10 years and probably much longer. But opening a bottle soon won’t do anyone any harm. Drink now–2034 Peter Lehmann Wines Hill & Valley Riesling Riesling 2024 G 94 Plenty of attractive, up-front Riesling aromatics here, mostly in the lime spectrum with curd and custard suggestions included, which offer a lovely flavour profile with supportive acidity and citrus pith sitting in the background. A delicious wine that’s all about flavour and varietal friendliness. Good value, too. Drink now–2030 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Estate Riesling Riesling 2024 G 94 As with many Rieslings from the 2024 vintage, there’s a subtle approach to begin, delicate the word of the year, with a mix of citrus flesh and pith before a higher level of acidity grabs the palate with a tingling energy. Definitely a lively one. Drink now–2036 Pirathon Barossa Shiraz 2019 G 94 Now dubbed Silver Label, but still a great value, cracking and delicious Barossa red, from a range of sub-regions, that has been such a crowd-pleaser. Maturation is for a year-and-a-half in a combination of American, French and Hungarian oak, some of which is new. An opaque, near black hue, the nose exhibits notes of chocolate, cassis, black fruits, warm earth, dried herbs, axle grease (in the most positive way), espresso, a smoky note and blackberries. Real intensity on the palate follows with noticeable grip and concentration supported by fine, firm tannins and serious length. This will provide pleasure for a good 10 to 15 years. Drink now–2039 Poonawatta Eve Riesling Riesling 2024 G 94 Deeper floral fragrances with apple and lemon notes in the fruit suggestions, which all spill into the palate with good flavour and some exotic, almost tropical citrus and spice in the mix. An easier drinking Riesling with sensitively handled acidity, again almost with a spicy note in its lingering finish. Drink now–2030

Medium-deep crimson. Lovely warm pure blackberry, mulberry, cassis aromas with liquorice notes. Well-balanced blackberry pastille, mulberry, raspberry liquorice flavours with hints of roasted walnut and fresh long al dente grippy tannins. Modern and sleek. 14.2% alc Drink now–2028 Monteperle Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 G 94 From the Lyndoch sub-region of the Barossa Valley, this wine spends around two years in new French oak. Under cork. An opaque purple colour here, the nose exhibits the full array of attractive Barossa Cab notes – chocolate, tobacco leaves, smoked meats, leather, cassis, mudcake and much more. Big, bold, powerful and concentrated, there is oak evident here but it is finely integrated. A lingering finish with fine, firm tannins, this is the sort of wine you could easily put away in the corner of the cellar for five or six years without any problem. What you’d then find would be a warm climate Cab in fine form, full of flavour, and giving pleasure for another decade. Drink now–2034

Paulmara Estates Apotigi Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Plushly concentrated wine with plentiful blackcurrant jam, fig, dark chocolate, liquorice flavours, fine-grained tannins and well-integrated acidity. Some tobacco leaf at the finish. 14.5% alc Drink now–2032
