G 94

Deep crimson. Attractive dark cherry, panforte aromas with mocha notes. Well concentrated with generous dark berry, panforte, espresso, mocha flavours and fine loose-knit chocolaty textures. Finishes firm with fresh aniseed notes. Very good volume, density and richness, with the alcohol lengthening the palate. 15% alc Drink now–2030 Hewitson Miss Harry GSM 2023 G 94 The blend here is 35% Grenache, 33% Shiraz and 32% Mourvèdre from the Barossa. 48% of whole bunches are included and then the wine undergoes ageing for nine months in older French oak barrels. The vineyards which provide the fruit date back to the 1800s and average over 75 years of age. If there is one thing that Dean Hewitson and his team never fail to do, that is to make wines full of flavour that are terrific drinking. Deep garnet, this is fresh and full of energy. Finely balanced, there are notes of red fruits, dry herbs, raspberries, mulberries and coffee grinds. This is seamless in structure with silky tannins, a seductive texture and excellent length. Cracking value, wonderful drinking and a future for at least the next five to eight years. Drink now–2032 Hewitson Ned & Henry’s Shiraz 2022 G 94 This has intentionally been made to ensure it drinks well when young, as well as into the future. That it is brilliant value is simply a bonus. A combination of whole berries and those crushed, with several weeks on skins before 16 months maturation in older French oak barriques. Inky black, the nose exhibits notes of dark chocolate, mocha, roast meats, black cherries and leather. A savoury style with fine balance, there is good intensity here which runs the full journey plus silky tannins and impressive length. The palate sees notes of warm earth and spicy sausages emerge with saturated flavours throughout. Like this a lot and can certainly be enjoyed now, but will also age for a decade at least. Drink now–2034 Hewitson Ungrafted Grenache 2023 G 94 Medium-deep crimson. Lovely strawberry, raspberry fruits with some Campari- like notes. Pure fruited and buoyant wine with ample raspberry, strawberry, red cherry fruits, loose-knit/lacy textures and lovely mid-palate viscosity. A light line of aniseed tightens and lengthens the palate. 14% alc Drink now–2027 Hewitson Monopole Shiraz 2022 G 94 Deep crimson. Elderberry, dark cherry liqueur, dark plum aromas with mocha notes. Generous and inky deep with youthful dark berry fruits, slinky textures and well-balanced mocha, hint ginger notes. Firms up at the finish with chinotto/star anise notes. Sleek and modern wine. 13.5% alc Drink now–2032

The Shiraz here came from the foothills of the Barossa Ranges. From a cracking vintage, it shows just how delicious the combination of top year, Shiraz and the Barossa region can be. Under diam. A dark mauve shade, this explodes with ample black fruits, plums, herbs, coffee grinds, dried fruits, liquorice, soy, miso and dark chocolate. A wonderfully generous wine with serious length, fine balance and silky tannins. 10 years will hardly put a dent in its evolution. Great stuff! Drink now–2034 J J Hahn Reginald Shiraz Cabernet 2023 G 94 A Barossa version of the great Aussie wine blend, which will only add to the reputation which is superb and stunning value. The wine has good length of flavour with a lingering finish and supple, sleek tannins. The palate sees a hint of tobacco leaves emerge. Love it and expect to drink beautifully for a decade.
