1954 TULLOCH PRIVATE BIN POKOLBIN DRY RED Hunter Valley, New South Wales
Tulloch was once the largest vineyard holder in the Hunter Valley, with 300 acres. During the 1920s and 1930s, its wines were sold under the Caldwell’s label, bottles of which have surfaced occasionally at tastings over the years. The popular wine figure Len Evans described the 1954 Private Bin Dry Red [shiraz] as ‘one of the most famous Australian wines ever made – a fantastic old red; big and firm, tremendous flavour and nose; sturdy, strong; firm clean finish; a magnificent wine’. The 1954 Private Bin Pokolbin Dry Red won first prize for Claret, first prize for Burgundy, and the Best Red Wine of the Show at the 1956 Sydney Royal Wine Show, an extraordinary feat that primed debate about labelling nomenclature.
