The project took nearly 25 years to complete and employed over 100,000 people from over 30 countries, playing an important part in seeding a multicultural Australian society – many of the workers came from opposing sides of the European theatres of war, including Germany, Greece, and Ireland (both neutral), Italy, Romania, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia. Some of those immigrants, which comprised 70% of the workforce, settled later in the irrigated vineyard areas, especially around Griffith, where an Italian community flourished. . . .
