CHAPTER 17 | 1930–1938 – The Dead Dog Bounce
The last thylacine, 1936. On 7 September 1936 only two months after the species was granted protected status, the last known thylacine died from exposure at Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart. Their population in Tasmania is estimated to have been around 5,000 at the time of European settlement. Excessive hunting, habitat destruction and introduced disease, led to their extinction.
