THE AUSTRALIAN ARK – Federation to the Modern Era | 1900–1982
During the 1920s and 1930s signwriting and advertising merged into fine art. Rousel Studios in Sydney were the leading proponents of this highly skilled craft. Jules Henry Roy Rousel (1897–1985), joined the family business in 1920 after completing his art studies at the Royal Art Society School of New South Wales and a signwriting apprenticeship to his father. He became the leading artist of this genre and would also study fine arts at the Slade School of Fine Art at the Royal Academy in London (1935–1938). These glass signs were commissioned by the Balfour Hotel (Westphal’s Wines) and Penfolds, highlight an ambition to bring a more sophisticated image to Australian wine.
