This may seem a very strange combination of grapes, but think Côte-Rôtie (Moscatel instead of Viognier) or even the Barossa itself 50 or 60 years ago, when apparently the addition of a dollop of white wine to their reds was commonplace. On the basis of this evidence, it is a practice worth revisiting. The fruit comes from a range of vineyards throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The wine spent almost two years maturing in a mix of new and older French hogsheads and American barriques. The colour is a deep, dark and almost mysterious maroon. It is often considered that the addition of a tiny amount of white can lift the aromatics and we see that here. An utterly enticing aromatic profile with florals, chocolate, black fruits, liquorice and beef stock. Neatly balanced, well structured and with a lingering finish, this is a supple style with velvety tannins. It will continue to provide pleasure for the next eight to 10 years. Drinking well. 14.5% alc Drink 2024–2028 First Drop Wines Mother’s Milk Shiraz 2022 G 93 Deep crimson. Intense black cherry, boysenberry hint walnut liquorice aromas. Juicy and richly flavoured with lovely fresh blackberry, black cherry, boysenberry fruits, sinuous chalky tannins and a long thread of aniseed. Delicious early drinking wine. 14.5% alc Drink now–soon-ish Genista The SG Shiraz Grenache 2022 G 93 Each year, this is the wine that seems to poke its nose ahead of the pack and this vintage is no different. One would be forgiven for assuming that naming a Barossan Shiraz Grenache ‘SG’, would be to reflect the varieties in the blend, but it is not so. It is named in honour of Sarah Gregory, one half of Genista. A dark purple hue, the wine has generous and comforting notes of chocolate and warm earth, with dried herbs, mulberries, aniseed and soy supported by a supple texture with very fine tannins. The wine exhibits both balance and intensity with impressive length. Enjoy over the next four to six years. Drink now–2030

The grapes are sourced from older vines which are located between Seppeltsfield Road and Marananga in the Barossa. Maturation is for 14 months in French oak barriques, 30% of them new. Dark maroon, there is some typical Cabernet austerity here with notes of tobacco leaves, cloves, aniseed, graphite, smoked meats, cold tea and axle grease. There is plenty of grip here and a lingering finish with good intensity. A wine which will be better in two to three years and then drink beautifully for the next decade. Drink now–2034 Dandelion Vineyards Wonderland of the Eden Valley Riesling 2024 G 93 Pale colour, green hue. Immediate elegance – beautifully perfumed, pure lemon, lime aromas with slatey nuances and a hint of white floral. Zingy acidity, well- concentrated lemon lime flavours, grapefruit pith – appealing line of purity. Refined poise and fruit clarity carried by chalky phenolics. Textural with a sweet–sour finish. 11.5% alc Drink now–2034 Eisenstone Greenock SR801 Shiraz 2022 G 93 From the Mattscheoss Vineyard, which is located on the western side of Greenock Creek, maturation is for 20 months in French oak, with 50% new. Just 800 bottles made. This is slightly more fleshy than some in the Eisenstone range, but nothing wrong with that. An appealing and approachable style which many will adore, the colour is a near black/magenta. The nose provides alluring notes of dark chocolate, aniseed, beef stock, axle grease (in the most positive way), blackberries and miso. A supple and generous texture here, that bright acidity runs the length, which is seriously impressive, and the tannins are as silky as anyone could wish. A delicious Barossa Shiraz with at least eight to 10 years ahead of it. Drink now–2034 Eisenstone Ebenezer SR802 Shiraz 2022 G 93 The grapes here hail from the Micken Block, which is part of the Hoffmann’s Ebenezer Vineyard which is younger plantings of iconic old vines. The wine sees maturation in French oak for 20 months, 50% of that oak being new. 2200 bottles made. The colour is a magenta/maroon hue. The nose is oozing chocolate and mocha, with miso, coffee beans and soy, along with notes of tobacco leaves and black fruits. There is a delightfully supple texture here. The oak is superbly handled, the acidity bright and the structure seamless. A wine of very good length and balance with sleek tannins. A very fine Barossa Valley Shiraz which will continue to impress for at least the next eight to 10 years. Drink now–2034
