Trescowthick Wines The Naughty One Pinot Noir 2022

G 93

G 93

One of three single clonal expressions grown at Sidewood’s Oakbank district vineyard. Excellent pinot nasals, cherry, faintly charry, with really pretty rhubarb-like flavours, tart and lively, in the palate. Juicy and refreshing as well. 13% alc Drink now–2030 Sidewood Oberlin Pinot Noir Pinot Noir 2023 G 93 One of three single clone expressions grown at Sidewood’s Oakbank district vineyard. Here, the crimson cherry fruits come imbued with more savoury elements, bush florals, roses, a white mushroom twist. Has inbuilt layers that offer ongoing interest. 13% alc Drink now–2030

Medium crimson. A subtle yet sophisticated perfume; red cherry, plum, watermelon, pine, a whisper of juniper berry and pencil shavings. Richly fruited, flavours transition seamlessly from one to the next in what is a commendably balanced wine. The naughty one is beautifully behaved. Drink now–2030 Varney Wines Chardonnay 2023 G 93 Luminescent lemon hue. Attractive lift on the nose; lemon squash, kaffir lime, pavlova, with whiffs of verbena and slate. An initial sweet citrus core is layered with intricacy and complexity. Buttermilk tang, powdery talc, crème caramel decadence and gingernut spice on the finish. Well coordinated, this is luscious yet steered with pliancy and grace. A wine worthy of one’s attention. Drink now–2030 Vinteloper Pinot Noir 2023 G 93 Garnet hue. Reticent yet intricately perfumed, florals to the fore – peony and geranium followed by rooibos, blacky cherry and a hint of blood orange. Soft and lightweight, fruit gallivants the palate leaving behind footprints of amaro and sweet tobacco. Acid, tannin symmetry in a wine that is wonderfully balanced. This says all the right things about Pinot Noir. Drink now–2030 Vinteloper Odeon Pinot Noir Pinot Noir 2021 G 93 Charry to start, with a faint note of bacon fat as well. The fruit senses are very fresh and lively in the palate, raspberry spectrum, good mouth-filling textures packing in some weight and drive. Not so immediate in in expression, requiring a bit of contemplation – worth it. 13.5% alc Drink now–2032 Watkins Clarendon Adelaide Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 G 93 Deep crimson, near black. Intensely perfumed; a medley of black and blue fruits, liquorice strap layered with ink and sweet mocha. Generous and full in flavour with an abundance of fruit that edges on greedy. For the voracious Cabernet drinker, you are in for a treat. Acidity acts as a fountain of youth, maintaining the wine’s vitality despite its age. Age which uncompromised has beautifully fused tannins. A wine of verve and wisdom. Drink 2026–2030 Wicks Estate C.J. Wicks Pinot Noir 2022 G 93 Medium-deep crimson. Complex and brooding – boysenberry, ripe strawberries, vanillin, cinnamon, roasted beetroot showing a bit of polish. The palate wavers in the wind with a savouriness that is grounded by lovely fruit weight. A breath of star anise on the finish, the wine is gently guided by fine, well integrated tannins. C.J. Wicks tells an unfolding story in the glass. Drink now–2030

The Other Wine Co Sangiovese 2024

G 93

Medium crimson. Fresh vibrant aromatics of raspberry, sour plum, hint of strawberry confection and wet clay. An abundance of sweet, ripe fruit – red berries move to the darker spectrum as mulberries and blueberries take the fore. Sinewy tannins gentle clasp the fruit, holding them long enough to integrate with the black tea flavours. A well-made, quaffable wine. Drink now–2029 The Pawn Wine Co Montepulciano Montepulciano 2022 G 93 A house style is evident across The Pawn Wine Co’s Med/Iberian reds: a middle weight structure, varietal fruit definition and a crushed rock minerality. Here there’s a Black Forest cake vibe: dark cherry and blackberry with a sense of creaminess, rich and decadent without being heavy-handed, the tannins in place to confirm its meat- friendly compatibility. Drink now–2030 The Pawn Wine Co Sangiovese Sangiovese 2022 G 93 Another in the dynamic alternative variety portfolio of The Pawn Wine Co, here tending to the red fruit end of the spectrum and grounded by an earthiness and cedary wood dusting. The fruits spring into action in the mouth, juicy, red cherry and crimson plum, with sticky sangio tannins adding grip and fortitude in the finish. Worth a second dip to unpick its fascinating layers. 14.5% alc Drink now–2030 The Pawn Wine Co Shiraz Shiraz 2021 G 93 Almost shy at first, but perhaps this more about the wine’s overall elegant nature, demure, but once you get to know it, there’s a juicy purity and, with further enticements, a milk choc and cherry-like richness that develops in the palate. The fruit has a tension and energy as it enters into the tannin zone in the finish, which in real words means there’s an impressive lingering of flavours. A wine that sings ‘Come Back Again…’ 14.5% alc Drink now–2030
