John Duval Wines Entity Shiraz 2023

G 96

From old vines across the Barossa and the Eden Valley, the wine saw barrel maturation for 15 months, including 21% in new hogsheads. The remainder spent time in older hogsheads and puncheons. A dark cherry/maroon colour, there are coffee bean, mocha and cassis notes to the fore, supported by black fruits, liqueur cherry and warm earth touches. Bright and juicy acidity runs the full journey and there is serious length here. Intensity is maintained throughout and the wine finishes with silky tannins. This is serious and exciting stuff. Fifteen years. Drink now–2040 Kalleske Wines Eduard Shiraz 2022 G 96 Deep crimson. Musky black cherry, blackberry, graphite, savoury complexity, touch bush garrigueand earthy aromas. Inky deep wine, fresh buoyant black cherry, blackberry, olive tapenade and choco berry. Attractive pastille fruits in mid-palate carried by persistent chalky al dente tannins. A tensile wine with great ageability. Drink 2032–2044 Kalleske Wines Johann Georg Shiraz 2021 G 96 Deep crimson. Elderberry, blackberry aromas with dark chocolate notes. Smooth, velvety and voluminous with ample blackberry confit, elderberry, mulberry fruits, chocolaty tannins and underlying roasted chestnut notes. Drink now–2040 Leo Buring Leonay Eden Valley Riesling 2025 G 96 An early vintage in the Eden Valley, but a promising one. The fruit came from the famed Woodbury vineyard, which was planted in 1972. A cold ferment with neutral yeasts and then three months on yeast lees. A relatively low 10.5% alcohol makes that second glass irresistible. The selection of fruit for the Leonay varies between the Eden Valley and the Clare Valley, depending on vintage conditions, and in 2025, the Eden Valley took the flag. Almost invisible in colour, the nose gives us an array of spices, citrus, white jasmine and even hints of that old favourite, the iced vovo biscuit. There is juicy acidity here and the intensity is maintained throughout. A lovely lingering finish with the flavours reflecting the aromatics. This has 15 to 20 years of providing pleasure ahead of it. Drink 2030–2045 Leo Buring Leonay Riesling 2025 G 96 Almost understated to begin, the vintage expression with minerals over florals well expressed before rising with gorgeous fruit in the palate, fabulous textured pith and acidity powering through, amazing length to top it all off. A wow Riesling in anyone’s terms. Drink now–2040
