In Praise of Shadows Nera Grenache 2025
G 91
Nero D’Avola dominant red wine from Spring Hills and Jelka vineyards, all within Blewitt Springs. The high tones and almost confectionary attraction of Nero dominate the nose. The palate is a toffee apple of ripe red fruit and succulent sweet and sour berries. There are some pithy tannins and it’s poignant from start to finish. This may be too piquant for some; no, it’s not a smooth, classic red wine, but with a slight chill, this will have you bouncing off the walls with merriment. Dare to be
different – it’s more fun. Drink now–2028 Karrawatta Ace of Trumps Grand Vin Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
G 91
From vines planted in 2001 and matured for 18 months in 50% new French oak. Cabernet’s classic features are all here, with sandalwood, nutmeg and cinnamon. Some potent rosemary, bush mint and brown earth. Some old spice, coffee grinds and cherry syrup. Once again, under natural cork, this is developing and showing its oak spice and tertiary characters. Drink now. Ledson Vineyards Fiano 2024 G 91 From estate-grown fruit, gently pressed and matured in stainless-steel tanks on lees for 10 months. A spring posy of elderflower, lime leaf and feijoa. A hint of blackberry thorn and wheatgrass. Fruit intensifies into the tropical notes of honeydew melon and nashi pear. A juicy line of acidity with twinkles of sea salt specks. This is hard not to love and a wine that would be perfect for crowds, as it’s full of sunshine and crystal clean tree and island fruit. A crispy finish and ideal for many occasions, namely with good friends and loads of smiles and laughter. Drink now–2028 Mr Riggs Generation Series, The Magnet Grenache 2024 G 91 A delicate crimson in the glass. The wine is joyous with tangerine skin, Rainier cherries and musk. Fruit is kept bright and lively, really honing in on that crunch of watermelon and raspberry slushie with some sandy tannins. You might be tempted to think that, at the price, this isn’t a serious wine, but it’s held by its fine structure and yet offers so much drinkability and immediate pleasure. A wide burgundy glass will show it off, but you could also just throw bottles on the table with party pies and have the time of your life. Magnetic in its drawcard to fun. Drink now–2028
