Pauletts Sangiovese Rosé Sangiovese 2025

G 93

A lovely, spice-fuelled Sangiovese Rosé. Cherry, raspberry and redcurrant meet spice, pressed flowers with a pinch of wild herbs and pepper and it’s a bright, perky mix. The wine speaks to the variety and the style, and is immediately enjoyable, offering a creamy palate edged in savoury tannins. And that delicious spiciness helps it run long. Drink now–2028 Pikes The Hill Block Cabernet 2023 G 93 A cool year, and Cabernet rises to the occasion, deep, resonant and surrounded in a veritable forcefield of tannin. It’s a keeper. Fine, firm tannins guard concentrated black fruits, plum, cassis, earth, briar, spice, a smattering of crushed herbs and black liquorice. It’s early days for this wine, which is only made in exceptional vintages. A dusting of amaro bitters brings a savoury note before finishing firm and dry. Drink now–2038

Pikes Il Premio Sangiovese 2024

G 93

Sangiovese gets some serious wine-growing and -making attention and rises like cream to the top with a cherry-studded, savoury-influenced wine that shines. Brilliant cherry crimson-red hues. Black cherry, sour cherry, cranberry fruits come layered between herbs, peppery spices and earth notes. It’s a finely textured, finely nuanced Sangiovese that is less about boldness and more about a fine-tannined, gently savoury expression of the grape. And it’s mighty good. Drink now–2034 Skillogalee Small Batch Malbec 2023 G 93 From well established, ungrafted vines comes one smooth-running lively youngster offering a summery, red-berried interpretation of Malbec worth exploring. Red plum, blueberry, vanilla, dusty cocoa aromas are lit up in aromatic dark florals. Carries a lively beat on the palate in fresh acidity and ripe tannins dancing to striking berry fruits and spice, but don’t be deceived – there is also depth and concentration here. Drink now–2033 Sussex Squire The Partnership Shiraz, Mataro 2023 G 93 A 60/40 blend of two like-minded grapes that hit it off like old friends. They dance, they stroll, they offer a friendly walk across the Clare Valley sharing sweet ripe red and black fruits, a world of warm spice, fennel and sage, cacao and a touch of harmonious vanillin oak. So inviting, so seductive, so darn enjoyable right now. Drink now–2030
