Chaffey Bros. Wine Co Salvis Gratia Old Vine Semillon 2023

G 91

Barossa Semillon from old vines is guaranteed to engender interest. The wine has also spent some time in new French oak puncheons, so you can be certain it will vary considerably from what we know and love from the Hunter Valley – enjoy the differences. Wild fermentation, the fruit comes from a vineyard planted in 1893. Six months sur lie, just 300 dozen made. Lemon yellow in colour, we have notes of dried herbs, stewed pears, a tiny flick of spicy oak and hints of grapefruit. Just a touch of mandarin and beeswax at the finish. The wine has medium length with a firm finish and should provide pleasure for at least another 6–8 years. Drink now–2033 Chaffey Bros. Some peppery spice helps to season the framework. Drink now–2030 Cimicky Wines Cimicky Autograph Shiraz 2023 G 91 Under Diam, this is dark maroon in colour. Quite toasty oak is immediately apparent, along with notes of warm Barossan earth, black fruits, mushrooms, espresso and dried herbs. Perhaps a little simpler than some, but it is chock full of delicious flavours. Attractive any time over the next few years. Drink now–2028 Gatt Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 G 91 Medium-deep crimson. Raspberry, redcurrant, touch cassis aromas with underlying savoury nuances. Inky textured with raspberry, red liquorice flavours and loose-knit grip tannins. Cedar/ walnutty finish. Drink now–2032 Gibson My Darling Merlot 2023 G 91 While this may seem a curious name for a Merlot, each to their own and there is always a reason; what is far more important is what is in the bottle, rather than what is on it. The name is actually a tribute to winemaker Rob Gibson’s wife, Anne. The colour is a ruby magenta hue. The nose gives us notes of bay leaves, dried herbs, plums, raspberries, animal fur and warm earth. Quite savoury in style, it is perhaps more of a richly flavoured Barossa red than a classic Merlot, but it certainly provides pleasurable drinking. The wine is fresh, with a gentle texture and is a medium length. Enjoy it over the next 2–5 years. Drink now–2030
