Paulmara Estates Syna Shiraz 2022
G 92
The block of Shiraz used here was planted on the estate, in the sub-region of Marananga, back in 1995. Most of the fruit goes to Penfolds and has, on occasion, been used for their Grange. The team retain a small amount of fruit for their prestige wine, Syna. Under cork, just 1,200 bottles were made. Deep maroon, the wine is still showing lashings of oak at this early stage, but integration is proceeding well. There are notes of chocolate, coffee beans, vanilla, toast, blackberries, smoked meats and blueberries. Medium to good length, there is oak still evident on the finish and it would be of benefit to leave the wine for two or three years, before enjoying it for the following decade. Drink now–2035 Poonawatta The Eden Reserve Riesling 2024 G 92 Clear colour. Aromatic baked lemon, verbena, hints of musk and developing oil skin. Plentiful lemon curd, brown lime, camomile and touch beeswax. Expressive with appealing mid-weight palate, good complexity and al dente finish. Drink 2027–2039
Poonawatta Four Corners Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
G 92
Deep crimson. Sweet blackcurrant, chinotto, tobacco leaf, sage aromas. Inky and sweet-fruited with attractive cherry/ cassis, chinotto flavours, grainy textures and some mocha/ bittersweet notes. Distinctly Cabernet in character. Drink now–2035 Precious Little Nero d’Avola 2024 G 92 From a vineyard located in what many consider to be the very heart of the Barossa valley, the Marananga sub-region, the wine saw an extended maceration on skins for 10 months. It then spent further time in French oak. The variety may be a long way from its Sicilian home, but it has taken to Australian conditions in the most impressive way. Maroon/magenta in colour, we have notes of red fruits, warm earth, herbs, blackberries, bay leaves, mulberries and chocolate. There is power and focus here with good concentration. A wine of medium weight and mid length, fresh acidity adds to the energy. Six years. Drink now–2031 Purple Hands Planta Circa Ancestor Vine Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 G 92 Deep crimson. Intense blackcurrant, bush garrigue, minty aromas with some praline notes. Fresh blackcurrant dark chocolate liquorice flavours, pronounced sturdy tannins and fresh linear acidity. Grippy firm with graphite notes. Drink now–2034
