Mirus Vineyards Block 21 Ridge Shiraz 2023

G 93

Medium-deep crimson. Blackberry espresso hint minty aromas and flavours, lovely mid-palate richness/ volume, supple tannins and underlying mocha notes. Builds up firm and tight. Bittersweet drying finish with aniseed notes. Drink now–2032 Monteperle Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro 2023 G 93 A very fine effort with this wonderful Barossa blend from a vintage that probably wasn’t the region’s easiest of late. Maturation is in a mix of French and American oak. Another wine showing the versatility of Grenache in this region and that it can work so wonderfully well as a component of a blend. Under cork, this is a serious contender for heavyweight bottle of the year. A dark garnet/magenta hue, there are beautiful fragrances here with notes of dried herbs, smoked meats, violets, cherries and mulberries. A medium weight style with very good length and sleek tannins and deftly handled oak. Enjoy this over the next 10 years, longer if you prefer. Drink now–2035 Monteperle Reserve Shiraz 2023 G 93 If the team’s GSM was a contender for the heavyweight bottle of the year, this wine, under cork, must surely take the title. The wine receives extended maturation in a mix of French and American oak, a considerable portion of it new. A dark maroon hue, we have notes of mulberries, mushrooms, liquorice, chocolate, cranberries, soy, beef stock, red fruits, plums and bay leaves. There are rich flavours throughout here and a delightfully seductive texture. This is generous and approachable, a wine of medium weight and length with sleek tannins. It will provide pleasure for the next 10–15 years. Drink now–2040 Mountadam Vineyards Riesling 2025 G 93 Pure citrus flesh and blossom aromatics, a faint aldehyde note which offers a positive edge as well. The palate is all in the right place with flavour and acidity in neat balance, and a spicy note to the finish. Drink now–2035 Mr Riggs Baxter’s Block Shiraz 2023 G 93 From a vineyard planted in 1908, the colour here is a dark maroon. The nose gives notes of leather, mushrooms, warm earth, dark berries, and coffee grinds with a touch of bay leaves. Gentle oak integration. There is serious focus here and impressive length, with fine if slightly chalky tannins. A powerful style for enjoying over the next 12–15 years. Drink now–2040
