Peter Lehmann Margaret Semillon 2017

G 94

There was a time when Barossa Semillon was massively popular in this country, and probably none reached the heights of the standard Semillon from this winery. Their prestige Semillon, named after Margaret Lehmann, Peter’s wife, still has a wonderful reputation among wine lovers, and this particular release has been extremely successful. The wine is always given five years in the cellar before release and it inevitably can take many more after release. Lemon yellow in hue, there are occasional flecks of green as well. Impressive for an eight-year-old wine. There is already some maturity and complexity evident here. Hints of lemon and lime cheesecake notes with florals and beeswax, along with touches of peaches and mandarin are all present. A wine of very good length, fine acidity and a firm finish, this will continue to age and improve over the next 10–15 years. It is also a fun wine to sneak into a blind tasting. Drink now–2040 Pewsey Vale 1961 Block Riesling 2024 G 94 From the block planted back in 1961, the grapes were wild fermented and spent a little time on lees. This is a Riesling destined to age brilliantly. The vineyard sits around 500 metres above sea level. The colour is almost invisible, the merest shade of yellow. The nose reveals aromas weaving through lemon curd, florals, wet stones, grapefruit, talc and spices, all with a minerally support system. There is a line of fine acidity, with focus and impressive balance, finishing with good persistence. Put this away in the cellar for 10–12 years, or considerably longer, if you prefer. Drink now–2037 Pewsey Vale Estate Riesling 2025 G 94 Good aromatics, a little fennel-like edge to the nose, with ripe flavours and expression to follow. Has a pleasing and welcoming style. Drink now–2034 Poonawatta The Cuttings Shiraz 2021 G 94 Deep crimson. Fresh black cherry, cedar mocha aromas with ironstone notes. Lovely black cherry, blackberry, praline flavours, grippy firm tannins and underlying mocha notes. Minerally and crispy at the finish. Drink now–2040 Poonawatta Four Corners Shiraz 2022 G 94 Deep crimson. Developed mocha, espresso, blackberry jam aromas with marzipan notes.
