Where less is more. Drink now–keep for a while Thorn-Clarke William Randell Shiraz 2019 G 95 This cracking Barossa Shiraz was named in honour of a family ancestor, Captain William Richard Randell. Always good to see wines which have enjoyed some time in the cellar before release, especially when it is from such an excellent vintage as 2019. Maturation was in American oak, 40% of which was new, for around a year and a half. The final wine is a barrel selection. Under cork. Dark maroon hue, there is some maturity as one would expect, along with a little oak still evident. There are notes of chocolate, liquorice, plums, cassis, axle grease (in the most positive way), coffee grinds and blackberries. The structure gives us a wine which is seamless, finely balanced and very long. There is an enticing palate and intensity is maintained for the full journey. This will continue to drink beautifully for the next 10–15 years.

Elegant, subtle aromas, floral, bushland, and a properly delicious palate where flavour and texture are symbiotic, the weight in lovely shape and even lines across the whole wine. Much to love here. Drink now–2036 Welland W67 Old Hands Shiraz 2022 G 95 The name ‘Old Hands’, is a nod to the army of grape growers throughout the vineyards of the Barossa Valley and their priceless experience, gained over a lifetime. The wine spends up to a year and a half maturing in American oak hogsheads, 40% of them new. The colour is a vibrant yet dark purple. The nose reveals aromas of cocoa powder, mocha, coffee beans, soy and aniseed. There is impressive oak integration and the palate sees hints of charcuterie and truffles emerge. The wine has serious length, fine but firm tannins, good balance and an appealing generosity throughout. A juicy style with a delightfully supple texture, this will provide pleasure for at least the next 12–15 years. Drink now–2040
