Deep crimson. Intense raspberry, roasted walnut/ roasted chestnut/ marzipan aromas and flavours with leafy nuances. Silky smooth at first but builds volume and torque across the palate. Very good mid-palate density and impact. Finishes firm and juicy with bittersweet notes. Drink now–2034

Hare’s Chase St Melangell Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

G 95

Medium-deep crimson. Fresh blackcurrant, dark chocolate, cedar aromas. Inky deep and sweet fruited with plentiful cassis dark chocolate flavours and fresh al dente tannins. Claret-firm at the finish with cedar notes. Very good definition and flow. Should develop further. Drink now–2038 Hayes Family Wines Sam’s Grenache 2024 G 95 A really exciting Barossa Grenache here. Just 2,000 bottles made. The team use their very best parcels of old vine grenache from across the region. The colour is a crimson/maroon. The wine is finely balanced, with focus, power and refinement. The nose gives us notes of raspberries, kirsch, charcuterie, a touch of earth, truffles and red cherries. It is seamless, generous and seductive, with a fine line of acidity and superb balance. Lingers for an amazing length of time. This is a 10–15-year proposition. An absolutely cracking Barossa Grenache. Drink now–2040 Hayes Family Wines Mataro 2024 G 95 We continue to see more and more single varietal wines made from mataro, not just out of the Barossa Valley, but it does seem to be the leading region. One look at this wine and you’d have to wonder why we don’t see an awful lot more. 1567 bottles made. The blend comes from two mataro blocks, planted in the 1940s, in the Stone Well sub-region of the western Barossa Valley. Dark maroon with a purple rim, this really is a cracking wine. Richly flavoured with notes of coffee beans, chocolate, cassis, blackberries and mocha. Generous, intense and hiding serious power underneath, this is plush and seductive, offering the silkiest of tannins and amazing length. A stunner. The team suggest cellaring it for up to five years, but personally, I think it could easily go three times that. Drink now–2040 Hayes Family Wines Reserve Grenache 2024 G 95 Medium-deep crimson. Musky plum, black cherry, strawberry aromas with chinotto notes. Well concentrated strawberry pastille, dark cherry fruits, fine slinky textures and underlying marzipan notes. Finishes slinky/ al dente and minerally. Drink now–2034
