McLaren Vale Wine Guide 2026

Pertaringa Understudy Shiraz 2023

G 91

For under $35 you can find a basket of black, blue and red berries. A sphere of blueberry, black cherries and some mulberry. Some pomegranate seeds come through on the palate. There is a base of potting soil, rich dark chocolate and cassis too. Tannins are taut and powdery, with enough acidity to provide the wine with its affable drinkability before poppyseed on the finish. This is a pool of dark fruits and spice, interwoven into a medium-bodied sip. A nice number to have with steak and kidney pie. Drink now–2031 Sherrah Chenin Blanc 2025 G 91 A very approachable Chenin Blanc showing the green apple, nashi pear and subtle guava side. It slips down the palate with ease, some margarita-like moreishness. Bone dry with some talc-like skin grip and a wash of lemon icy pole freshness. This is a wine for drinking after arriving home from the beach, togs on, sand on the heels and enjoying a glass whilst you wait patiently for the shower. Drink now–2027 The Battle of Bosworth Fiano 2025 G 91 Verging on the just tropical fruits. This is cantaloupe and ripe lemons. Freesia and frangipani florals too. The palate harnesses the fruit and dials it up with passionfruit and pineapple. Acidity maintains its pace throughout. A very easy wine to like and to drink. The grace of Fiano in the Vale is real. Drink now The Battle of Bosworth Shiraz 2023 G 91 An enticing wine with exotic florals and a mix of black and red fruits, some liquorice allsorts and Gala apple lift high above some cedar oak spice. The palate is succulent with crunchy acid and a plummy finish. A chunky beef pie will do quite nicely for this easy on the palate wine. Another wine of value. Drink now–2028

Varney Wines Mencia 2024

G 91

Fruit is sourced from Oliver’s Taranga in Seaview. Whole bunch carbonic maceration 14 days on skins and into French barriques for five months. A wildly spiced wine with sumac, raspberries stewing in a pot, and cassis. There is boysenberry intensity, followed by graphite, potting soil and tree bark. The palate takes on a halo of acidity that surrounds the wine, almost a coolness to the fruit verging on blue now as well. A lovely way to experience Mencia, and be privy to its startling aromatics in a pleasantly easy drinking style. Drink now–2030
