McLaren Vale Wine Guide 2026

Pasha Shiraz 2021

G 94

This vintage of the Pasha once again delivers quite a seamless and engaging Shiraz from the Vale. This vintage dials in on the rounded and curvy black cherries with Illawarra plum skin and bilberries. There is an uplift from lavender, blackberries and a wild side to the nervy acidity. Tannins are silk-like but the buoyant energy from this vintage is what is most memorable. It’s a wine of elegance and tightly knit but fine tannins. This will age very well over the next 5–6 years, and if opening tonight, make sure it’s with someone you like and served with a osso bucco marrow

and creamy mash. Drink now–2031 The Battle of Bosworth Heretic Touriga, Graciaco, Mataro, Shiraz 2024

G 94

A blend of 41% Touriga, 41% Graciaco, 9% Mataro and 4% Shiraz. A purple haze of mulberries, violets and grape lolly. Some graphite, nigella seed and clove spice. It has a dancing spirit with medium to soft tannins and acidity that pushes through evenly. The artful blend encourages you to leave your expectation at the door and enjoy the wine for its bright crimson fruit and ease on the palate. So much fun, and oak is well handled to let the fruit character speak. Sensational value. Drink now–2028 Thistledown Thorny Devil Grenache 2024 G 94 A wine so tempting, it’s a crime. Here you’ll discover the breadth and scope of McLaren Vale’s diverse sites wrapped in one hell of a glamorous drink. Wild strawberries warmed by the sun, stretched berry roll-ups, dry sand and five spice powder. A touch of dried bay leaf and clover. Tannins sit up front on the palate; like a hessian bag, they help absorb all the juicy fruit, making for a nicely dry wine. It’s nothing short of delectable; buy it whilst you can. Drink now–2030

Wirra Wirra The Angelus Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

G 94

Sourced from two vineyard sites, clearly earmarked as excellent Cabernet blocks, if this is any indication. Enticing varietal bouquet – more black olive and bay leaf than wild cassis, revealing some whole bunch bark and bushy notes in the palate to season a fleshy blue- to black-berried fruit seam, supported by a finely cast finishing structure, dusted with subtle French oak woodiness and judicious tannins. Smart Cabernet pleasures encapsulated. Drink now–2036 Wirra Wirra The Absconder Grenache 2024 G 94 From intensely selected two vineyards in the region’s south western sector. Attractive crimson in the glass, cherry cola-like fragrance, sweet oak spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Red fruits in the palate with a minerally, earthy vein through its core, this is a Grenache made with the intent to be taken seriously. Drink now–2034
