Oliver’s Taranga The Hunt for Mrs Oliver Late Disgorged Fiano 2017
G 95
It shouldn’t be news that Corrina Wright has been championing Fiano since 2004, but what a treat to taste a late disgorged 2017 sparkling Fiano. It opens with marigold flowers, dried pineapple and lemon jam. Anzac biscuits, toasted sesame and fennel seed quivering in heated oil. It spreads across the palate with wide unfurling wings, doubles down on sesame again and adds some nougatine and shortbread into the mix. Its shape and unique biscuity toast make for sublime drinking, with plenty to keep you tasting and tasting again. Treacle and orange bitters – the flavours go on and on. It’s complex, moreish and detailed, and unlike almost anything you’ve had before. Drink now–2030 Penny’s Hill Single Vineyard Grenache 2024 G 95 Blewitt Springs fruit from 76-year-old bush vines. 25% whole bunches matured on lees for seven months in French puncheons. A wine that beckons to you, full of mystery and dainty red berries. Redcurrant and hawthorn, dried lavender and rose. Spices unfold, powdered cumin and paperbark. A touch of autumn leaf. Tannins have been gently eased into the wine, acidity in the driving seat but with a relaxed nature. This is a wine that feels very comfortable in its skin, effortless and balletic. Use your big Burgundy glasses and serve something like chanterelle risotto. Drink now–2032 Penny’s Hill Yeenunga Grenache 2024 G 95 52-year-old bush vines lie in a horseshoe contour in the Seaview sub region. 30% whole bunch matured on lees in concrete eggs and French puncheons for eight months. A veil of redcurrants, cranberry and raspberries. Dry dust and a thicket of thorny leaves. There is a nutty hemp-seed-like note that draws you in. A ribbon of very precise and fine redcurrant on the palate, like slipping into a satin dress. The palate leaves you clean, an almost copper coin-like savoury quality. A fascinating look at what can be done with Seaview fruit, this is fine and ornate in style. Drink now–2030 The Battle of Bosworth White Boar Shiraz 2024 G 95 Cane-cut shiraz and dried on the vine. White Boar is a wine that leaves its mark. It’s the intensity, the staying power and the grace that lies in the balance of it all. Bilberry, peppercorns and kirsch. Some gun metal, volcanic rock and sage leaf. The palate finishes with a clean grip of skin tannins, and despite its power, it’s moreish to boot. A style that is completed very well. Drink now–2030
