G 90
Another flowing and pure red from the great 2023 vintage. Raspberry, strawberry purée, and dried thyme. It’s elegant and glossy; velvety, even. Easily overlooked if you’re obnoxious and busy. Aren’t we all sometimes? In the mouth, the dried herbs show their thin-veiled heads: paperbark, bay leaf, and dried tarragon. Yet milk chocolate, vanilla, and mulberry fight them for top spot. Tannins are fine and a little sticky. The finish is complex and savoury. It’s good wine, from a good year, made by a great producer. Drink now–2032 Thompson Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 G 90 Classic Cabernet. Violets, plums, snapped twigs, and a touch of eucalypt are all in balance. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied, fresh, and lightly framed. An easy Cab that delivers on its promise. Drink now–2029
G 90
Fortified Muscat à Petits Grains Blanc from unirrigated 64-year-old vines. Here, you’ll be forgiven if you weren’t quite ready for this, considering the bottle shape. But you only need to pour it into a glass to know you’re not in Kansas anymore. Lean in, and you’ll find orange blossoms, honeycomb, and glacé orchard fruit. Luscious doesn’t cut it; it’s viscous and decadent. Drink now–2035
