The Margaret River Wine Guide 2026

Altus Rise Wildlight Sauvignon Blanc 2025

G 91

Margaret River Savvy, the colour here is pale lemon with flecks of green. Alluring aromas throughout, it is quite lifted with a mix of the tropical and herbal. We have notes of passionfruit, mangoes and nettles, even a hint of zesty citrus, all supported by a fine line of acidity. The wine is of medium length and will provide pleasure over the next three years, though there is no need to wait. Drink now–2028

Brown Hill Estate Ivanhoe Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

G 91

The 2023 Ivanhoe is one dependable chap. Upright with dark cherry skin, fresh prune, and clove studs. Fresh bay leaf, black peppercorns. The wine has settled and shows silky tannins and a plushness to its core. It’s in a very nice drinking window right now, or if you prefer velvety wine, give it another 3-6 years in the cellar. A cottage pie and a few glasses by the fire would restore any weary soul. Drink now–2031 Clairault Streicker Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2022 G 91 Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a twitch of Cabernet Franc. This is potent with dark cherries and Davidson plum jam. Smoked cherry and some fresh gravel and tar. Peppy leaf and the bracken of shrub and dried brown earth. Some raspberries poke their ruby head up on the palate, and tannins sweep in with conviction. Some leather and tobacco pouch, oak flavours linger with cinnamon and sweet nutmeg. This will continue to give with time in the cellar or drink now with charred lamb chops. Drink now–2032 Clairault Streicker Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2024 G 91 78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Semillon, a blend of two sites. Wilyabrup and Karridale. Fragrant strawberry guava, glacé pineapple, and taut mango skin. Lemon popsicle and freshly squeezed limes. Acidity bursts with pickled limes, a nutty almond oil savoury note, and a hint of herbal cold pressed olive oil just sits behind it. Bone dry finish and plenty of flavour length. This is screaming, ‘Drink me with peppery rocket, slices of chicken and creamy goat’s cheese’. Drink now or cellar to see those savoury notes develop and unfold further. Drink now–2026 Credaro 1000 Crowns Shiraz 2024 G 91 Violet and inky mulberries, some dark plum skin, and clove studs. Astute with fine tannins and pops of blue fruit intertwined. There is a powdery mealy note that allows for drinking now but still has a way to go in your cellar. Lamb cutlet lollipops whilst you stand around a BBQ would suit nicely. Drink now–2030
