Subsea Estate Pure Ocean Semillon 2024

G 92

Whether you believe that immersion in the ocean for maturation for a wine is a positive, or merely the latest marketing gimmick, it does seem at the very least that it does no harm. And it may well be extremely beneficial, although I suspect we’ll need considerably more experience before definitive answers can be made. What we can say is that this is a thoroughly enjoyable Semillon, however it was made. We understand that maturation was in the depths off Cape Leeuwin. The colour is a deep straw yellow. The nose gives us herbaceous notes with hints of nettles and blackcurrant leaves. Very much that style throughout, this is bright and fresh with a lingering finish. Good flavours abound and the wine has impressive balance. An intriguing style, and one which should continue to improve over the next six to eight years. Drink now–2031 UMAMU Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 G 92 The beauty of Cabernet and its journey through time is becoming rarer and rarer in the hearts and minds of many. The 2013 is showing raspberry roll up, some strawberry seeds and Christmas cherries. Mocha and ironstone, sumac and powdered cinnamon dust. Kalamata olive and dried rosemary, with tannins still propping the wine’s backbone. This shows its impressive vintage, and its delicate chew is something to really behold. Serve alongside Moroccan spiced pork or dukkah-crusted lamb. Drink now–2027 Victory Point Cabernet Franc 2024 G 92 A single vineyard Cabernet Franc from a warm and very dry vintage, the driest experienced by this winery since they were established. The aim was to make a quality red for younger drinking and while they have certainly achieved that, I really think that anyone putting a few bottles away for the next eight to ten years will find themselves well rewarded. A bruised plum colour, there is a vibrant crimson rim. The nose reveals notes of black cherries, tobacco leaves, dried herbs, dusty earth and animal skins. Quite a fleshy, appealing style, deliciously juicy; there is good intensity through to fine tannins with a finish that maintains its persistence. This is a medium weight and seriously interesting Cabernet Franc. Drink now–2030
