The Margaret River Wine Guide 2026

Victory Point The Mallee Road Cabernet Malbec 2023

G 93

In terms of value, this is my favourite of the Victory Point releases. In terms of quality, it sits with anything in the portfolio. One suspects that the largess of the 2023 vintage plays a role here. Dark maroon. On the nose we have notes of plums, leather, florals, blackcurrants and black cherries. A medium-weight style with some elegance and direction, this is beautifully structured with good focus, through to satiny tannins. Perhaps a touch more length would elevate this wine even further, but there is already much to like. Enjoy it over the next ten years. Drink now–2035 Windance Estate Glen Valley Chardonnay 2024 G 93 Sherbet, green melon, and burrata. It leans a little too Margaret River to pretend otherwise, preferring bare feet over steel caps, Land Cruisers over Teslas, and tensioned fruit over broadness. The latter is no easy feat in a hot vintage like 2024. Wild fermentation and 40% new French oak. Peach cobbler, cashew cream, and stone-fruit skins. The palate is textured, the acid framing, and the rawness … beautiful. Drink now–2030 Altus Rise Wildlight Shiraz 20241 G 92 Excellent value Margaret River Shiraz, the wine is a vibrant dark purple hue. The nose reveals notes of chocolate, plums, black fruits and dried herbs with a hint of graphite, leading to some sour cherry notes on the finish. Good concentration throughout to fine, chalky tannins. The wine does have good persistence and will provide attractive drinking over the next four to seven years. Drink now–2032 Brown Hill Estate Fimiston Shiraz 2023 G 92 A swirl of blackberries and blue tinned plums. Some Davidson plum jam and vanilla extract. Red cherries and rhubarb appear mid-palate with plenty of juicy freshness and a weave of fine tannins. Specks of black olive and some granitic rock on the finish. This still has a way to go, think 5-6 years in the cellar, and with some lamb shoulder would be a treat. Drink now–2031 Brown Hill Estate Golden Horseshoe Chardonnay 2024 G 92 Jonathon apples, lemon curd, and buttery toast points. Some candied lime zest, too. Here is a Chardonnay style that’s in great demand for its orchard fruits, tied up with a box of new oak with delicacy and a precise finish. A peach melba concoction with nutmeg, cinnamon dust, and guava skin to boot. Drink now–2035
