Passel Estate Lot 71 Reserve Syrah 2021
G 93
The team selected specific rows in the vineyard for this flagship Shiraz, which underwent whole cluster fermentation and then saw sixteen months’ maturation in large format French oak puncheons. 40% of those puncheons were new. Blood red/maroon in hue, the nose offers notes of black fruits mingling with red, pencil shavings, dried herbs, beef stock, mushrooms and cassis. There is good focus with impressive balance, through to fine tannins. The oak integration is effectively complete and done well. Lots to like with this slightly savoury Syrah style, which should drink beautifully for the next ten years. Drink now–2031 Rosily Merlot 20231 G 93 As always, this is a winery providing cracking value, as well as excellent drinking. This Margaret River Merlot has a crimson/purple hue. Soft and gentle in style, there are notes of plums, fruitcake, florals, herbs, cherries and mulberries. Beautifully balanced, there is a lingering finish with bright acidity and fine tannins. A cracking Merlot for enjoying over the next six to ten years. Drink now–2035 Rosily Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 20251 G 93 A traditional West Aussie Sem Savvy blend, but there is a dollop of Muscadelle as well, à la Sauternes, though we have not travelled down that sweet road here. 20% of the wine spends two months maturing in new French oak. The colour is a shimmering lemon. The wine is beautifully fresh, elegant and balanced. Very much a cut above the usual ‘classic dry whites’, with notes of freshly cut flowers, gentle lemon, grapefruit pith, beeswax and white jasmine, with just a whiff of grassy hints. The balance really is immaculate, the texture seductive, and the palate seamless. A fine line of acidity and very good length tie this most attractive package together. Will go for another eight to ten years, if you must. Drink now–2035

2023 is proving to be a superb year for Cabernet Sauvignon in the Margaret River region, and this is no exception. Deep maroon in colour, the nose exhibits notes of plums, cranberries, florals, dried herbs, bay leaves, warm earth, blackberries, root vegetables and smoked meats. There is an appealing touch of chocolate lurking in the background. Sleek in texture, the wine is of medium weight with decent persistence. Very attractive silky tannins on the finish; there is a juiciness to this wine which is most appealing and will keep you coming back for more. Enjoy this for at least the next eight years. Drink now–2033
