Kilikanoon Small Batch Grenache 2022

G 91

The Small Batch label is where the Kilikanoon winemakers are allowed to push winemaking boundaries. In this case, they explore the role of whole (intact) bunches with Grenache. While we are not privy to the percentage of whole bunches, they provide a subtle, lifted herbal edginess that sits well with Grenache, bringing out the grape’s rosemary, peppery qualities in tune with its dark plums, dark cherries and light, earthy savoury features. Those whole bunches also play a role in the structure of the wine, which is firm and fine. Dry to close. Drink now–2028 Knappstein Riesling 2025 G 91 A lemon spritz-like rizza bursting in youthful energy. Seriously bright and jumping thanks to some crunchy acidity. Brings plenty of citrus fruit-driven and green apple qualities to the wine with just the lightest dusting of spice and gentle florals. A lovely delicacy of expression. Drink now–2035 Knappstein Malbec 2023 G 91 A stand alone Malbec is becoming a rarity, but the Clare Valley has a long history with the grape where it thrives. Lots of class here with scents of blueberry, red plum, sage and crushed herbs and cocoa and earth. The palate is juicy and bright fruited with rising florals and a real elegance. Tannins are soft and easy as the palate rolls out smoothly while delivering summer fresh berries and spice. So good. Drink now–2028
