James Kalleske Centenarian Vine Shiraz 2024

G 93

The grapes here come from the Schiller’s Block which was planted by Bernhard Schiller back in 1925. Under natural cork, the wine sees 10% whole bunches, and maturation, in the same vessels and percentages as for the Grenache, is for nine months. Garnet/magenta in colour, the nose is quite earthy and we have some early complexity evident. There are notes of chocolate, leather, black cherries, aniseed, dried herbs, and cold tea. Quite a savoury style. We do see some mushroomy notes emerging down the track. There is good acidity, excellent length and fine tannins. A hint of sour cherry is evident right at the finish. For enjoying over the next eight years. Drink now–2033 John Duval Wines Compono Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 G 93 This is the second release of this wine. This time, the fruit was sourced from the Hutton Vale Farm Vineyard in Eden Valley and blended with 35% Cab from Moppa. Maturation was in barrels, French oak hogsheads, with 20% of them new, for 15 months. 450 dozen made. A plum/magenta hue, the wine exhibits notes of plums, warm earth, aniseed, coffee grinds, chocolate, tobacco leaves and animal skins. Good complexity is already emerging. This is ripe, soft, approachable and generous, with a long and persistent finish. Soft, furry tannins and a seductive texture complete the picture. Enjoy over the next 8–10 years.
