Yalumba Samuel’s Collection Shiraz 2023
G 94
Medium-deep crimson. Blackberry, olive tapenade aromas with roasted walnut, chinotto notes. Expressive and sweet-fruited with attractive mid-palate density and persistent chocolaty tannins. All the elements in clockwork order. Drink now–2030 Yalumba The Signature Cabernet, Shiraz 2022 G 94 The Signature, always a tribute to a deserving contributor to Yalumba and/or the Australian wine industry, is probably Yalumba’s best known wine. A superb vintage in honour of Paul Midolo, their Executive Director of Sales for Australia and New Zealand. As always, made by Kevin Glastonbury himself, the recipient of the 2019 Signature. The blend, all Barossa, is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz. The vines average 52 years old and the wine spent a year and a half maturing in a mix of new Hungarian oak hogsheads, French barriques and hogsheads (21%), with the remainder in older barriques and hogsheads, both Hungarian and French (for those wondering, Yalumba are one of the few wineries remaining in the world to have their own cooper; hence, such innovative oak treatment is not beyond them). Under cork. A very dark maroon, the nose is all about chocolate and mocha notes, aniseed, black cherries, smoked meats, blackberries, bay leaves, bacon fat, and cloves. Rather silky on the palate, there is good oak integration proceeding well. There is good balance, bright acidity, and impressive length. This release has perhaps a touch more elegance than some from the past, and it is all the better for it. An excellent Signature from a superb vintage, and still youthful. Drink now–2040 Yelland & Papps Limited Cuvée Shiraz 2023 G 94 Deep crimson. Black cherry, earthy marzipan aromas. Generously concentrated black cherry marzipan/ cedary flavours, and dense chocolaty/ velvety textures. Surprisingly minerally at the finish with a graphite plume. Drink now–2036 Barr Eden Estate Love Over Gold Grenache 2022 G 93+ Medium-deep crimson. Lovely musky plum, chinotto aromas with hints of sage/ bush garrigue. Generous and supple in texture with plentiful musky plum, strawberry fruits, fine slinky textures and underlying savoury complexity. Some saline/ mineral notes at the finish. Drink now–2035 Gibson Wines Discovery Road Shiraz, Montepulciano 2021 G 93+ Deep crimson. Black cherry minty aromas. Fresh glossy sweet black cherry pastille fruits, some cola/ mint notes and persistent chalky mineral textures. Finishes chalky firm and minerally. Buoyant early drinking bistro style. Drink now–soon.
