John Duval Wines Annexus Shiraz 2023
G 94
The fruit for the third release of this wine came from a single vineyard in the northern reaches of the Eden Valley. Only 300 cases were made. Maturation was in French oak hogsheads and puncheons, 25% of which were new. Maturation was for 15 months. Cherry magenta in colour, the aroma weaves through notes of aniseed, graphite, cloves, cold tea, beetroot, chocolate and smoked meats. Lovely early complexity here. A seductive texture, the wine is of medium length with the intensity perhaps a little more upfront than with some. Overall, there is good refinement here and a gentle lingering finish with sleek tannins. For enjoying over the next 8–10 years. Drink now–2035 John Duval Wines Plexus Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro 2023 G 94 From the Barossa Valley, including regions as diverse as Ebenezer, Light Pass, Tanunda, Moppa, Marananga and Krondorf, the blend here is 46% Shiraz, 34% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre. Maturation was for 15 months, in a mix of French oak hogsheads and puncheons. 10% of the hogsheads were new. A beautifully perfumed wine, this is blood red in colour. We have aromas weaving through cherries, blueberries, florals and tobacco leaves. Immaculate balance with a silky texture, there is impressive length, and the finish lingers well. Seductive with fine, satiny tannins, there is much to love here. Eight years. Drink now–2033 Kaesler Wines The Bogan Shiraz 2022 Medium-deep crimson. Flinty, mulberry, dark cherry mocha aromas. Richly flavoured and supple in texture with ample dark berry fruits, fresh ripe tannins and well-integrated mocha notes. Finishes firm and long with bittersweet notes. Decant before drinking to let the reduction lift off. Drink now–2034 Lambert Estate Family Tree Shiraz 2022 G 94 Under Diam, the colour here is an opaque maroon with a lighter rim. There is still oak evident on the nose, but this is quality oak and well into the process of integration. A wine of intensity at every stage. The nose gives us notes of plums, liquorice, coffee beans, black fruits, chocolate, dried herbs and cloves. This really does exhibit bold chocolate flavours. An exuberant style with very good length and fine tannins. One for the long haul. Love it. Drink now–2040 Langmeil Wattle Brae Riesling 2025 G 94 Pale, straw hue. Elegantly fragrant lime curd, camomile, slatey aromas with a hint of verbena. Tightly coiled with youth yet concentrated, a display of pure fruit expression: lemon, lime, and green apple. Appealing fruit sweetness and lovely freshness carried by a softly powdered finish. Quite a graceful wine. Drink now– 2036
