Pewsey Vale The Contours Museum Reserve Riesling 2018

G 95

This wonderful vineyard has featured in so many photos over the years that you almost certainly know it, even if you think you might not. The vineyard was planted in 1965. The team at Pewsey Vale cellar some of their Rieslings for a period, so you don’t have to, and the benefits are immediately apparent. This one is from an excellent vintage. It is utterly beyond me why people do not fall over themselves to grab these wines, and by these wines, I mean great Riesling from regions like the Eden Valley and the Clare Valley. They are surely, far and away, the great bargains of Australian wine. They can age for decades, they are ideal for a wide range of foods, and they are delicious. Yellow gold, the first impression on the nose is of lemon butter on toast. Perhaps that resonates more with me than some, as my grandmother used to make brilliant lemon butter and I’m sure I ate far too much of it, but it is a wonderful aroma. There is a touch of peach, some florals and citrus and some beeswax as well. A flick of acidity runs the length, and the palate is seriously long. Still tight and pristine, there are both hints of maturity and complexity already evident. Expect these to increase. It has another 10–12 years ahead of it, more if necessary. Drink now–2037 Rieslingfreak No. 12 Riesling 2025 G 95 So much lemon, both flower and flesh, with a fantastic edge of fruit sweetness through the palate, acidity driving, though not excessive. High class. Drink now–2040 Saltram Mamre Brook Riesling 2024 G 95 The fruit for the Mamre Brook Riesling was sourced from an Eden Valley vineyard planted in 1947. The 2024 vintage is proving to be an excellent one for the region. A pale yellow hue, this is classically Eden Valley in style. We have notes of citrus, grapefruit pith, gentle florals, and jasmine. A steely style with an emphasis on focus and length, the wine has balance and drive. Approachable and generous, for Riesling, which I guess is relative, with a lingering finish. This is a cracker and should provide ten to twelve years of excellent drinking. So persistent and attractively textured, there is much to love. Drink 2027–2037 Schubert Estate The Lone Goose Shiraz, Viognier 2021 G 95 Deep crimson. Intense raspberry, blueberry praline/ panforte liquorice aromas and flavours, lovely volume and well-integrated chocolaty tannins. Firm cedary finish with seductive sweet fruit notes. Drink now–2038 Seppeltsfield Barossa Touriga, Tinta Amarela 2024 G 95 Deep colour. Fresh and characterful boysenberry liquorice/ aniseed aromas with dark chocolate notes. Well concentrated with musky plum boysenberry fruits, aniseed/ liquorice notes and underlying praline notes. Builds up brambly firm with a juicy finish. Very buoyant, joyful and expressive. Drink now–soon
