Murray Street Per Se Red Blend 2021
G 95
The team select fruit from their two finest parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine, both from their Greenock vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Under Diam. The wine sees the addition of 3% petit verdot. Maturation is in French oak barriques for 14 months, 80% of which were new, before finishing in a 30-hectolitre oval cask for the following four months. A vibrant crimson red hue; for me, this is a massive step up on the standard Cabernet. There is excellent oak integration and the nose exhibits notes of blackberries, graphite, chocolate, plums, soy, cloves and black cherries. This has power but also refinement. It is well focused with fine, firm tannins and is very long with excellent balance for the full journey. A 15-year proposition. Drink now– 2040 Murray Street Aria Shiraz 2021 G 95 From priceless old vines from two vineyards from the Greenock sub-region planted in 1960 and 1976 respectively, this is a barrel selection. Under Diam. 10% whole bunches were included in the fermentation. Maturation was for 13 months in oak before the wine was transferred to oval casks for a further five months. 48% of the oak was new and it was a mix of French and thick stave Austrian oak. A magenta/ maroon hue, this is an intense style with coiled underlying power. Leaving it for two to four years, before drinking over the next 10–15, will be to its advantage. We have notes of chocolate, liquorice, blackberries, mocha, dried herbs and cassis. There is an extra level of refinement here and a good line of acidity. We see black cherries and leather emerging on the palate and there are satiny tannins on the finish. Very good length here, this is one for the long haul. Drink now–2040 Paulmara Estates Syna Shiraz 2021 G 95 From the same site as is used for their 2022 version of this wine, this is also under cork. 1,800 bottles made from what is fast becoming known as one of this century’s finest vintages for the region. Black/maroon in hue, the oak here has integrated beautifully and is certainly more advanced than it is with the subsequent vintage. The nose gives us notes of liquorice, chocolate, blackberries, florals, charcuterie and mocha. There is good intensity and the wine offers impressive length. Finely balanced with a line of acidity running the full length, the palate sees bold chocolate notes emerging. A terrific Barossa Shiraz for drinking over the next 15 years. Drink now–2040 Paulmara Estates The Marriage Barrel Selection Cabernet, Shiraz 2022 G 95 Deep crimson. Intense dark chocolate blackberry aromas with herbgarden notes. Inky deep choco-berry flavours, gravelly firm tannins and well-balanced nutmeg/ marzipan notes. Finishes Claret-firm. Oak slightly dominates right now but should integrate with time. Drink now–2036
