Elderton Helbig 1915 Shiraz 2023

G 95

Medium-deep crimson. Lifted musky plum, dark chocolate aromas with sesame, marzipan notes. Fresh dark plum, blackberry spice flavours with intense cedar/ marzipan. Mocha oak notes and sinuous chocolaty tannins. Finishes spicy/ cedary with espresso notes. Oak-dominant wine, but should settle down. Drink now–2036 Elderton Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz 2023 G 95 Vibrant deep crimson/mahogany. Rose petals, chocolate, mulberries, florals, blueberries, cassis and milk chocolate. The oak is deftly handled and leaves the wine with the impression of a silky texture, serious length and the finest of satiny tannins. Very much in the style of a Barossa classic. Everything is in place to ensure that further glories are revealed in the coming years. Drink now–2040 Gibson Burkes Hill Riesling 2025 G 95 Subtle and attractive aromatics – some native flora and bushland – with a pure, balanced, and even palate, classic acidity nicely threaded, with good lemon flesh flavours. Perfectly crafted. Drink now–2036 Glen Eldon Twisted Trunk Reserve Shiraz 2023 G 95 A small patch of Barossa Shiraz, planted way back in 1865, provides the fruit for this stunning and deeply flavoured red. It was always going to have a tough time following on from the wonderful 2022, but it manages to more than match it. A mix of new and older oak is employed. This is a dark but gleaming purple with such an alluring nose, richly aromatic. There is chocolate, cassis, mocha, blackberries, a flick of vanillin oak which is in the process of integration, graphite, soy, cloves and cocoa powder, with an enticing line of blueberries. So much to like here. Excellent length, a fine line of vibrant acidity, balance and sleek tannins. Such a generous and welcoming style, but it still has at least 10–12 years of providing pleasure ahead of it. Quintessential Barossa. Drink now–2037 Grant Burge Wines Thorn Riesling 2024 G 95 Pale colour. Intense lime, lemon aromas with hints of tonic water. Fresh minerally wine with lovely pure lemon flavours fine slinky textures and fresh long indelible acidity. Minerally and textural with a hint of sweetness at the finish. Drink now–2030
