Head The Contrarian Viognier 2024
G 91
A single site Viognier, just 90 dozen made. This is the fifth release of this wine, always coming from the same high-altitude Eden Valley vineyard. Alex was inspired to bottle a solo Viognier after visiting Château Grillet in the northern Rhône. Personally, I have always found their wines a little bit hit and miss, fantastic when they’re on, but there is nothing missing with this delightful example. Maturation was for nine months in a mix of French and Austrian oak. Strong gold hue, the nose reveals notes of stone fruits, melons, ginger and hints of warm pebbles. Lifts further on the palate, which is firm and concentrated. There is medium length here, with bright acidity and the finish sees a touch of apricot skin notes. Enjoy over the next three years. Drink now–2028 Alkina Kin Grenache 2024 G 91 Medium light crimson. Cherry cola aromas and flavours with light chalky textures, some mid-palate viscosity and long juicy acidity. Tropical fruit notes at the finish. Expressive and slurpy early drinking Grenache. Drink now–soon Barossa Boy Wines Double Trouble Shiraz, Cabernet 2023 G 91 Medium-deep crimson. Minty dark berry aromas and flavours with graphite flinty notes, fine supple textures, very good mid-palate richness and well-integrated acidity. Builds to a leafy/ al dente finish with aniseed notes. Early drinking bistro- type wine that opens up in the glass. Drink now–soon. Burge Family Winemakers Homestead Cabernet, Shiraz 2020 G 91 This example of the great Aussie red blend, under cork, spends 20 months maturing in a mix of French and American oak hogsheads. Deep blood red in colour, this is a savoury style, exhibiting earthy notes, mushrooms, dry herbs, cloves, soy and aniseed. There is good oak integration and the wine has balance. It lifts on the palate and has an appealing lingering finish with slightly furry tannins. Enjoy this over the next 8–12 years. Drink now–2037
