G 92

These days, the old Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre blend is as much a part of the Barossa landscape as it is of France’s Rhône Valley. And you can usually put good money on the fact that the Barossan examples will hail from vines much older than those found in the Rhône. Here, the vines range between 50 and an amazing 130 years of age. This is made by the former Barossa Winemaker of the Year Stuart Bourne. A dark garnet with a ruby red rim. The nose offers an array of perfumes, including plums, dried herbs, warm earth, liquorice, animal fur, red berries and spices. Juicy acidity, good focus, fine tannins and medium length here. It will provide pleasure for at least the next 8–12 years. Good buying. Drink now–2037 Bethany First Village Riesling 2025 G 92 An impressive and bone dry Eden Valley Riesling providing excellent value. This is also relatively low in alcohol, coming in at just 10.5%, making it ideal if you want a second glass at lunch. And who wouldn’t? Pale straw in colour, there is a rather exuberant nose with notes of spices, citrus, lemon, bath salts, florals and grapefruit with a minerally backing. Even a hint of crushed almonds flickers in and out. The wine is of medium length, with fine acidity, and will provide pleasure for at least the next half dozen years, longer if needed. Drink now–2031 Bethany First Village Rosé 2025 G 92 Rosé from grenache, showing the versatility of this wonderful grape yet again. The colour is a bright salmon pink and the nose has intense and punchy aromas. This is no glass of shrinking violets. We have notes of herbs, red fruits and strawberries and cream with zesty acidity and excellent length. An attractive style of Rosé for drinking over the next 3–4 years. Drink now–2029 Bosward Wines Shiraz 2024 G 92 The fruit for this pleasing Barossa Shiraz hails from three vineyards in the Tanunda/ Bethany sub-regions. The colour is a dark mauve with a vibrant crimson rim. The nose exhibits notes of plums, black cherries, smoked meats and freshly unearthed root vegetables. There is a sleek and soft texture, quite seductive, with fine tannins on the finish. A wine of medium length, which is well constructed and has very good balance. Drink now–2033 Brothers at War Some Other Guy Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro 2023 G 92 From the Springton, Eden Vale sub-region, this is a blend of 55% Grenache, 35% Shiraz and 10% Mataro. Maturation was for 15 months in older 500-litre French oak puncheons. The colour is a deep purple/maroon. Lifted aromatics bring us attractive spicy touches, even a flick of pepper, along with hints of plums, mulberries, warm earth, mushrooms, cocoa powder, raspberries and leather. A wine of medium length that lingers pleasantly through to sleek tannins on the finish. This will provide very enjoyable drinking over the next 6–8 years. Drink now–2033
